Q&A with an American R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actor and philanthropist with three Grammy Awards and three platinum albums.

Ne-Yo was born in Arkansas and was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. His first album, “In My Own Words,” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Aside from working on his own album, he also has a collective catalog of chart-topping songs that he has written for other artists such as Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Carrie Underwood, Enrique Iglesias and Dima Bilan, including Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable,” which stayed at the top of the charts for 10 consecutive weeks.

Q: Most people do not know that Big Dee Evans renamed you Ne-Yo, based on the character Neo from the film The Matrix. He stated that you see music the way that Neo saw the Matrix during the film. What other similarities do you feel you share with Neo?

A: To be honest with you, when I first got the name, I didn’t really like it. Neo was the savior of the world. I just thought the name was a bit too much — a lot of responsibility. But one person starts calling you that, then the next person, and the next person, and then suddenly, you’re Ne-Yo.

Q: Do you carve out time to sit down and focus and write lyrics, or do you allow it to be a completely organic process?

A: It’s a little bit of both. All day long, anything and everything can be inspiration for a song. But when it comes to sitting down and actually creating a song, I’m kind of a caveman … I can’t jump into this century and write a song on an iPad or my phone. I need a pen and paper.

Q: How do you feel about performing for the president, Mr. Obama, one of the most influential people in the world? What was that like?

A: You have to take away the whole concept of, “Oh my God, the President is literally 30 feet away from me.” Because if you dwell on that, it’ll create nervous energy that will mess you up. You have to tell yourself it’s another performance, another person who respects and appreciates my music. Then, once it’s over, you can step back and say, “Oh my God, I just performed for the most powerful person in the world.” But in the moment, you can’t dwell on it.

On October 15th, Estrellas De Moda will celebrate Latino fashion and culture benefitting the Hispanic Heritage Foundation Designers Mario De La Torre, House of Glaudi and Adolfo Sanchez will showcase their SS’16 Collections to a full house of Latin celebrities, media and influencers. Christina Milian will close the night on the 16th with live performance and a runway presentation of her SS16 Collection. Genlux Fashion Awards will curate a spectacular evening on the 17th with live music and fashion and MARCO MARCO will close the week with his Collection 4: F*kn Sirius, featuring the world’s most famous drag queens and trans models.

Greg Selkoe, a 39 year old CEO, with a lovely wife and two kids, son Rydel (4 years old) and the newest edition Bixie (6 months) live in Boston, and are the epitome of the all American nuclear family. What sets Greg apart is his contribution to the culture of Art.

In 2002, in Jamaica Plains, NJ in his parents basement he started a company called Karmaloop. The name was as original then as it is today, Which he said was a collaboration, after a friend at the time (Adrian O’Conner) had showed him an image related to the study of sacred geometry. A college graduate, and self described artist he took a chance and it paid off, handsomely.

Currently, Karmaloop has an email list of almost 1 million, with 100,000 member global affiliate market. If that isn’t impressive, perhaps the fact that after 15 years, Greg still lives and breathes his company. In fact his commute is about 45 seconds because he lives right next door to the office. And a typical day starts at 8am and runs until 8pm!

There is a very large parking lot, for the D9 headquarters in Compton, CA. The environment resembles airplane hangers where adventure seekers maintain, service and shelter there prized possessions, there wings. Huge structures, with very large entrances that are numbered alphabetically, unit F is the home for D9’s collection before it is shipped out, so far globally, but they are working on access to other galaxies and species!


The office Art is enchanting and plays with colors that vibrate activity and life. There Glen”Gza”  Yun and David “Grinch”  Yoo, co-founders live and breath this lifestyle. In there shared office, there is more art to discover and appreciate, along with many swatches and product pieces that are currently in development for the newest collection Spring/2015. Gza and Grinch have been life long friends, and there journey began in the early 90’s with Seung W. Lee aka “Nick” and Sammy “Haas” Igbara,. Originally, Nick described as a visionary with independent ideology in fashion and business, was working profusely from 91’-97’ during the Shell-Toe Movement and RUN DMC days. Nick would contact larger players in the game like Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, North Face daily to get his foot in the door and score an account. He would not take no for an answer, and this determination landed him nowhere for a long time. Until, one faithful day when he sent Haas to a trade show where he had a chance to speak with Tommy Hilfiger’s brother. At that booth, he was asked by Tommy’s bro to  go over to three young attractive females attending the show, and acquire their numbers. In a nut Shell, the premise was, I’ll give you an account if you get me those girls! Tommy’s brother watched as he attempted to do exactly that, (because he was willing to do whatever it took to be noticed and given a chance). As he turned and began to walk over to the young women, he was stopped and was told that based on his initiative, he had earned a meeting at 8pm that night with Tommy Hilfiger and his team in there private suite. Thus, began the working relationship with Sammy N’ Da Boyz which included Sammy, Nick and the greater New York Region.
